Is it wrong that I kind of like this thing? It’s temporary, so let’s just think of it as an installation. Sims Metal Management moved in last fall and well . . . you know how things accumulate after Labor Day (thank you Grey Gardens). Sims is in the process of dredging the harbor so their ships can come in and start hauling this all away. TV’s Bill Rappleye explains it all in a recent report for Channel 10. The pile — 50,000 tons and growing — is on Allens Avenue as you head towards Point Street.
I grew up in the New Haven area and there is a perpetual scrap metal pile on the harbor there. It doesn’t bother me… just reminds me a little of home, which really just means I don’t notice it. 🙂
We drove by this last week and Bear was appalled. I’m glad I can now tell her what’s actually going on.
I pass by this growing pile at least once a week and all I can picture in my head is the episode of the simpsons when springfield is paid to let other cities dump there trash. With all the reports that Providence is having financia; trouble this was a great fear of mine. Glad to hear that it’s just temporary and not that!
