‘Die Walküre’ Live In HD — Providence Place

(3.30) If your only experience with opera is Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in “What’s Opera Doc?”  — kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit — you may well enjoy the source material. This Saturday, Fathom Events will be screening “Die Walküre” live from the Metropolitan Opera.

The 2018-19 season of the Met’s award-winning global movie theater transmission series continues with the second installment of Wagner’s epic Ring cycle. Christine Goerke makes her Met role debut as Brünnhilde, alongside Greer Grimsley as Wotan, Jamie Barton as Fricka, Stuart Skelton as Siegmund, and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde. Philippe Jordan is on the podium to lead Robert Lepage’s visionary production.

The Met aired the entire Ring cycle a few years ago on PBS and the staging was mesmerizing. There was even an episode devoted to a behind-the-scenes how was that done? and I still couldn’t figure out what I was looking at. The music, the costumes, the performances . . . all stunning. I am not an opera fan, but I could not stop watching. And this event will have the advantage of the theater’s sound system.

German with English subtitles. Run time: 5 hours, 20 minutes. For synopsis and cast sheet go here.
