(11.30) The solution to homelessness? Housing! Fortunately the good people at Crossroads RI have that all figured out. It’s not just about having a safe, warm place to sleep, but having an address means everything in today’s world. Plans were announced in January for a renovation of this building. (Like many organizations today, they have a donation multiplier at work. So today is the day.)
And there is some matching going on at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, an organization of unquestioned integrity. And Dorcas International has been helping people in need for decades; they recently sprang into action assisting our new Afghan and Haitian residents.
But man does not live by bread alone. We also support our local arts organizations like AS220, New Urban Arts, and WaterFire.
And supporting government watchdog organizations has never been more important. I have found that Common Cause RI is keeping a sharp eye on things as is the ACLU of Rhode Island.
And you know who else is keeping an eye on things all around the state? Steven Ahlquist of Uprise RI. He attends those all-important, but usually boring, school board and city council meetings that used to be covered by the Journal. We owe him.
There are many more worthy causes and organizations out there. Just go ahead and give — it feels good.
