Welcome Back Helen Anthony!

Providence City Councilor Helen Anthony was badly injured last June while visiting California with her husband. She was struck by an elderly driver in a crosswalk, on her way to visit a state park, and spent the summer in intensive care followed by months of rehabilitation. WPRI reported on Anthony’s happy return to City Hall last Thursday:

Anthony spoke with reporters on Thursday night, revealing she was in the intensive care unit for 18 days and left Natividad Hospital in July. She said she broke 22 ribs and fractured vertebrae in her spine, face, and jaw in several places.

We are born with 24 ribs . . . I had to look it up. What a horrific ordeal.

This ridiculously overqualified woman happens to represent me, and everyone else living in Ward Two which includes the Wayland, Blackstone, and College Hill neighborhoods. While stepping away from certain prior council duties, Anthony will remain as chair of the Finance Committee, and boy do we need her expertise there.

Anthony was received in council chambers Thursday with a round of applause. Her comment to the gathering: “We’ve got so many financial issues that we’re facing and I’m just eager to get back.”
