‘Poor Things’ At The Avon

(2.15) For a complete escape from all the glad tidings and jingle-bellery check out ‘Poor Things’ at the Avon Cinema with Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Stone, star of the underappreciated ‘Cruella.’ Stone is currently nailing down the role of Whitney in ‘The Curse’ on Showtime, a show I can’t stop watching now but will never ever want to revisit.

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Read the NYT review. As my father used to say: For people who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they like.

Rated R for nudity, sex, evisceration, and scientific malfeasance. Running time: 2 hours, 21 minutes.

(I can’t resist: An Avon Cinema coffee mug and gift certificate might be a perfect Christmas present.)

‘Poor Things’ through February 15, Avon Cinema, 260 Thayer Street, (directions)
