‘Lumina’ Winter Festival Starts Friday

New this year from the Downtown Providence Park Network (DPPN) is the Lumina winter festival which aims to connect the Providence Rink to the 195 District Park along an illuminated Dorrance Street, transforming the city with light and art. Events and activities run through February 20th, kicking off Friday at 11:55pm at the District Park. (Their calendar of events says “11:55pm.”)

Making its RI debut at 195 District Park, Prismatica transforms the park and entrance of Dorrance Street into a kaleidoscope of color and sound. Prismatica transforms the park and entrance of Dorrance Street into a kaleidoscope of color and sound. These 25 prisms beg visitors to engage with the rotating forms while soft bell tones blanket the serene riverfront park, all month long until February 20.

I’m not totally clear on what happens this Friday in addition to Prismatica.

The piece in RI Monthly writes:

If you really want the full experience, however, you’re going to want to head downcity the weekend of January 26 and 27. From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., you can encounter dazzling sculptures and light installations across the festival’s footprint; ice cold beer offerings from The Guild; warm delicacies and from Providence restaurants and food trucks; and warmth and entertainment from Bodhi Spa’s mobile sauna.

There are a few organizations referenced here: The Downtown Providence Park(s) Network is new to me, and seems to share an address with The Providence Foundation, but is not listed as one of its members. The DPPN Instagram page says they were established in 2021.

According to the DPPN “expect weekend performances, programs, and tours!”
