New CMW Going Up In West End

A new and spectacular Community MusicWorks Center has been rising on Westminster Street just a block down from their original storefront. A virtual tour of the new venue shows why this will soon become an asset for the whole community featuring: gallery space, a café, a 3,000+ piece music library, classrooms and practice spaces equipped with smart-space technology and built-in recording equipment, as well as a 100-seat performance space.

Twenty-five years ago a small group of musicians founded Community MusicWorks, operating from a small storefront on Westminster Street in Providence’s West End neighborhood. More than two decades later, the innovative concept of building community through music education, performance, and social justice has proved itself through the organization’s growth into a thriving, award-winning nonprofit. In 2010, founder Sebastian Ruth’s MacArthur “genius” award cemented CMW’s national impact as initiatives inspired and supported by the program emerged across the continent.

Resident musicians teach lessons in violin, viola, and cello, mentor students, and perform as the ensemble MusicWorks Collective in a robust concert series throughout Providence and surrounding communities. The students, who live predominantly in Providence’s South Side neighborhoods, receive instruments free of charge and participate in a variety of activities, including lessons, studio classes and workshops.

(Side note: Go here to watch the Oscar-winning documentary short, “The Last Repair Shop.” Meet the students and the devoted craftspeople maintaining their musical instruments in the California public school system. Keep kleenex handy.)

The Providence public schools still have dedicated and talented teachers offering various programs, but CMW has taken it to another level.
