What Cheer? Brigade And Cable Car Team Up

Chop Chop (6.13) And it’s a full moon. The Cable Car Cinema host the premiere of the documentary “Brasslands” in conjunction with What Cheer? Brigade‘s 9th birthday bash.  Following the screening the WCB will march from the Cable Car to Aurora on Westminster Street.

A tiny Serbian village explodes with brass cacophony and riotous celebration as more than half a million music fans descend upon Guča, the world’s largest trumpet competition. Amidst a cast of defending Serbian champions and struggling Roma, an unlikely brass band from New York City, Zlatne Uste, voyages to represent the United States only a decade after NATO bombs rocked Belgrade. They will be the first Americans ever to compete at Guča. Brasslands offers an intimate and sometimes unsettling portrait of how the hopes and fears of this diverse group collide in their search for common ground and musical ecstasy.

The fun begins at 9:15pm with a parade from the Cable Car to Aurora at 276 Westminster Street, and continues with performances by Javelin, Father Murphy, Malportado Kids, and the What Cheer? Brigade. Cost: $8, but only $5 with your Cable Car ticket stub. A portion of every ticket will go to support Balkan Flood Relief Efforts.

(Seen here is a What Cheer? Brigade jacket currently on display in one of the Providence Art Windows downtown. The Chop Chop patch was embroidered by artist, and former WCB member, William Schaff . . . the same William Schaff who designed the whale guitar.  Talk about versatile.)

“Brasslands” starts 7:30pm, Friday, June 13, Cable Car Cinema, 204 south Main Street, running time 84 minutes
